How to translate your personal style into your home style

Day 8 of the 30-day blogging challenge

Personal style to home style

Today I thought it might be fun to talk about how your personal style affects your home style. So often I find the way my clients dress is how they decorate their home, usually without even knowing it. Another good indicator of what colors to use in your home can be determined by looking in your closet! I notice that most people with more formal homes aren't wearing sweatshirts and jeans, they probably dress more formal because that's a way of life for them. And on the flip side, people who like to lounge around the house in yoga pants live a much more casual lifestyle at home. Both are great, just very different.

Take me, for example. I usually wear a casual pair of jeans, a classy but comfy pair of loafers, a simple top, and maybe some cute earrings to dress up my outfit. That is a perfect reflection of how we live our life at home. Comfortable, casual, classic, and a little flair here and there.

When I started pulling images together of the clothes I like to wear on my Style Pinterest board, I thought, I love that, I want my house to look and feel like that too. So I found images of homes I liked and paired with the outfits I saved on Pinterest, and it all started to click. I felt like I had a clear vision of how my house should feel! Believe it or not, I struggle with how to design my own home. I see way too many pretty things as an Interior Designer. It's hard to pick just one direction ;)

Now it’s your turn!

Here's how to get started. Create a Pinterest board or print images and start a vision board (begin with the subject that's most comfortable for you; it might be fashion or home). Establish a look that makes you feel something; the images as a collective should evoke an emotion that makes you feel good. Once you're comfortable with the look, stick with it, and start pinning or printing pictures of the other subject that have the same feeling. You might fall in love with a picture and put it with your board and discover it doesn't work. You can like an image or individual item, but that doesn't mean it's right for this look. Set it aside for "someday" so you can come back to it later.

Try not to get overwhelmed with too many images and limit yourself to 3-5 pictures of each category. You should be able to get a clear vision of what you like from these pictures. Now that you've found a look you want, what do you think? Were you surprised? Tell me all about it in the comments below, are your home and personal style the same? Why or why not?!

For inspiration, here are some of the images that reflect my Home and Personal style:
