It’s no secret that the kitchen is the heart of the home. From early morning meal prep to leisurely Sunday brunches, the kitchen is more than just a room — it’s where life happens. Kids’ laughter mingles with the aroma of freshly baked goodies, and life-giving conversations happen over endless cups of coffee with friends. You have every reason to desire a timeless space that brings you joy while making your daily routine a breeze.

The good news? Achieving the perfect balance of beauty and function is well within reach. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite kitchen design elements and how we use them to infuse charm and enhance functionality. Let’s dive right in...

1. Classic Color Palettes

The journey to crafting a timeless kitchen always begins with a neutral color palette. Think of it as the foundation, setting the stage for a classic canvas where you can layer in other personalized design elements. While there is some debate surrounding neutral kitchens, here’s my take: when done thoughtfully, they’re beautiful, classic, and will never go out of style! This gorgeous kitchen is a perfect example…

In our Brandtjen Farm Project (above), crisp white shaker-style cabinetry contrasts beautifully with natural wood flooring, elegant black hardware, and leather bar stools, providing just the right amount of contemporary style while maintaining a classic color palette. Safe to say, this timeless design will maintain its beauty year after year.

2. Visually Interesting Mixed Finishes

Think everything needs to match perfectly in a space? Think again! Mixing multiple finishes is a fantastic way to infuse depth, personality, and character into your kitchen. We expertly mixed finishes in our Harriet Remodel, pictured below, and the results speak for themselves…

With its two-toned cabinetry, natural wood display cabinet, and the elegance of brass and oil-rubbed bronze light fixtures, this kitchen has become a dynamic space. No room for visual boredom here!

Pro Tip: It’s important not to get carried away when mixing finishes. To maintain a cohesive look, I recommend limiting the number of finishes to 3 colors. This ensures the space remains engaging without being overwhelming.

3. Statement Vent Hoods

It’s time to say goodbye to that mundane space above the stove! Swapping out the everyday microwave-over-the-stove setup for a statement vent hood is a huge game-changer. Not only does it elevate the aesthetic of the entire kitchen, but it also creates a powerful focal point. The kitchen of our Platwood Remodel Project is a great example…

This space was inspired by our client’s love of nature. Soothing teals and grays are reminiscent of foggy mornings on the lake, but the showstopper in this space is undoubtedly the gorgeous, understated custom vent hood cover. The natural wood brings warmth and coziness to the room, giving this kitchen the perfect touch of woodsy inspiration.

4. Gorgeous & Accessible Open Shelving

Ahh, open shelving… the secret recipe to blending function and aesthetics. When replacing traditional wall cabinets with open shelves, the result is an airy, accessible, and charming kitchen — a win-win for certain. Whether displaying your prettiest dishes, textured earthenware, lively plants, or your favorite art, open shelving gives you room to infuse your original personality while enhancing functionality. How? Let’s take a look…

In our Platwood Remodel Project, we designated a space to feature stunning open shelving in the same warm wood tone as the vent hood. Our client loved that his everyday dishes and glassware went from kitchen essentials to works of art, turning this space into an exhibition of personal style while keeping everything needed within arm’s reach.

5. Versatile Lighting

Your kitchen is a space that transforms throughout the day. It begins with soft morning light to wake up gently, transitions to bright illumination for meal prep, and winds down with a warm glow for evening relaxation. Achieving a layered and versatile lighting setup ensures your kitchen remains well-lit and creates an inviting atmosphere for every occasion.

In our Harriet Remodel (pictured above), we embraced a concept of simplified elegance by blending classic pendants with a brass finish alongside recessed can lighting and a charming milk glass sconce positioned above the sink. This combination of fixtures offers flexible lighting options, whether our clients are flipping pancakes at breakfast, sipping coffee with a friend, or hosting a cozy dinner.

6. Family-Friendly Features

All kitchens should be practical, but it’s an absolute requirement if you have kids. Invest in family-friendly materials now, and you’ll thank yourself down the road…trust me. This kitchen renovation is a testament to family-centered design…

The kitchen of our Orono Renovation Project features Cambria quartz countertops — my go-to choice for families. Why? The stone is sealed for life and virtually maintenance-free. The classic white subway tile backsplash adds a touch of beauty and is incredibly easy to wipe down. No more worrying about food and grease splatters on the walls!

My favorite part? The custom built-in banquette. It transforms this space from a cooking zone into a comfortable and inviting gathering hub. Every element of this kitchen was thoughtfully designed for efficiency, practicality, and beauty.

So, have I convinced you? When you renovate your kitchen, there’s no need to choose between a gorgeous design and a practical, functional space. By incorporating these design elements, you can elevate the visual appeal while creating a space that works hard for you. The result? A space where you’ll enjoy cooking, gathering, and creating lasting memories with your loved ones.
