2023 Design Trends for Timeless Interiors

Trends may come and go, but over the years, I have always stayed true to my aesthetic and values: simple, timeless, and functional spaces that effortlessly become the backdrop to your family’s best memories. However… I’d also be fooling myself if I said I wasn’t excited to explore what’s new this year!

When I look at design trends, I try not to think about who is promoting it or why. Instead, I ask myself which trends align with my own style and values. That’s how I ensure that I’ll love my design choices and that they will last — and you can do the same.

So, are you ready to take a look at what’s to come?

Warm Color Palette

Say goodbye to those cool blues and grays and prepare to welcome warmer and bolder hues. In both interior paint colors and home decor, the shift toward warmth is evident. Expect to see earth-toned neutrals like blush, terracotta, beige, tan, and brown mixed with olive greens and teal blues.

Even whites are trending toward more creamy, soft, and off-white rather than stark and bright. The 2023 colors of the year are proof…

Mixing Colors and Patterns

Rather than getting matchy-matchy with your colors and finishes, this trend calls for mixing things up to create visual interest. For example, when designing a bathroom, a thoughtful combination of brass cabinet hardware, chrome plumbing fixtures, and a black light fixture will effortlessly create a curated look far more compelling than any matching set.

Mixing patterns, however, can be a little trickier. It’s easy to accidentally cross the line from engaging to overwhelming unless you stick to this one simple rule: scale! If you choose to take the thrilling plunge and mix patterns, combine just one of each scale — small, medium, and large — for a design that is interesting and plays well together.

Soft Curves

Much like those 80s high-waist jeans that have resurfaced, curves are back and better than ever. Reminiscent of old-world architecture (think arched windows and doorways), smooth edges create a natural flow that is peaceful, classic, and elegant.

We’re gravitating towards circular dining tables, rounded swivel chairs, and curved decorative accents. In a room with mostly clean, straight lines, curves infuse an organic element and instantly soften the space… both aesthetically and literally. (I’m talking to you, moms of adventurous little ones!)

Organic Materials

There’s nothing groundbreaking about the shift toward using organic and natural materials to create a cozy vibe — we have been doing it for years! This style heavily focuses on handmade materials and the natural beauty of imperfections (think zellige tile and wood grain). Look for items with uneven edges, rough surfaces, color variation, tables with live edges, and furniture or textiles made from natural materials.

Pairing organic materials with modern elements like minimalistic, straight lines creates the aptly named modern organic style, which is the epitome of coziness. The living room pictured below is part of an entire modern organic home we designed that just oozes clean, casual comfort — yes, please!

Natural Wood Tones

Wood tones are making a comeback, and I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not the 90s golden oak we all know and love to hate (although, if you happen to have that dated look in your home, we’ve shared plenty of ways to update it.)

Get ready to see natural or dark-stained white oak, walnut, and various reclaimed species throughout interiors. From open shelving and range hoods in the kitchen to built-ins and beams in the living room, it’s easy to love the warmth natural wood adds to a home. This is the perfect blend of the “warm tone” and “organic” trends!
