The 6 Most Impactful Updates You Can Make in Your Kitchen

Let’s face it – life happens in the kitchen. It’s where the family gathers for dinner and conversation, where birthdays and anniversaries are celebrated, where homework is done, where holiday meals are prepped and enjoyed… the list goes on.

Since the kitchen is where we spend most of our time, it only makes sense that it needs to function well and look beautiful. Making updates where it matters most will bring ease and enjoyment to your daily life and any events you host. Let’s take a look at the most impactful kitchen updates you can make…

Kitchen Update #1: Stone Slab Backsplash

Stone slab backsplashes are undeniably gorgeous, but did you know that there is a ton of functionality and durability packed into this classic European look? With no grout lines, cleaning up after a messy cooking session is super simple — a quick wipe is all it takes!

In our Brandtjen Farm Project (pictured above), we opted for marble-looking quartz for both the countertops and backsplash, creating a clean, refined aesthetic that will stay beautiful for years to come.

Kitchen Update #2: Colorful Cabinetry

If you’re looking for a fun way to break away from the all-white kitchen trend, consider adding colorful cabinetry. Choosing a color you love is an easy way to create an inviting atmosphere and make your home feel more “you.”

Our Platwood Remodel above features a nature-inspired color palette throughout the home, and our client loved the idea of creating a colorful experience in the kitchen. The fresh teal on the cabinets adds warmth and personality in a big way. Who wouldn’t want to spend time in this cheerful room?!

Kitchen Update #3: Countertop Cabinetry

Countertop cabinetry, which extends all the way down to the countertop, is trending for good reason. It adds ultra-functional storage exactly where you need it. Whether you choose to hide countertop appliances in an “appliance garage” or add drawers for everyday essentials, you just can’t go wrong.

We added a gorgeous countertop cabinet in the kitchen of our Harriet Remodel (above), and our clients LOVE the added functionality it has brought to their space. Stored items are always within reach and the countertop stays neat and tidy. Win-win!

Kitchen Update #4: Statement Hoods

If you’re looking to create a wow factor in your kitchen, selecting a statement hood is an excellent way to do it. When you turn this everyday item into a stand-out focal point, you add an elevated feel to the entire kitchen. Design options for a custom hood are endless – plaster, wood or metal all bring texture and dimension to your space.

In our Lake Independence Remodel above, we created a gorgeous custom hood that brings all the design elements in the kitchen together. Not only is the shiplap hood a standout feature on its own, but it also enhances the family-friendly casual aesthetic created by the natural wood open shelves and farmhouse sink.

Kitchen Update #5: Wood-Stained Cabinetry

It's true, painted cabinetry has been enjoying its moment in the spotlight for years now, but we’re starting to see a reemergence of wood-stained cabinets — and I’m here for it. Allowing the wood’s natural beauty shine through adds a sense of warmth, coziness and character to your kitchen.

The good news? There’s no need to surround yourself with a kitchen full of one wood tone. (Remember the honey oak of the ‘90s that was everywhere? Let’s not go there again!) Instead, try staining one or two standout pieces, like we did in our Harriet Remodel, pictured above. The depth and contrast it adds is gorgeous!

Kitchen Update #6: Integrated Appliances

Whether you add a pull-out microwave tucked conveniently in your island or panel your refrigerator (like we did in the Platwood Remodel, peeking in the image above), appliances that are hidden or blend into your cabinetry create a clean and streamlined look. The focus remains on the design, and your eye won’t be distracted by stainless steel. Not to mention, it gives the entire kitchen an elevated and sophisticated look!
