Inspiration to Reimagine Your Home
If you’ve been itching for a decor change in your home during this pandemic, you’re not alone (and it’s definitely not just boredom or restlessness setting in). Before we were all quarantined to our living spaces, the truth is that we never spent more time than was necessary in them. Sure, we slept, ate, got ready for the day, and maybe relaxed with a movie in the evening. But lately we’re always at home, which means we’re all starting to look around and finally notice the bits we’ve probably been neglecting for far too long. Empty walls, bookcases overflowing with junk, stained/outdated/damaged rugs, and tired (and just plain uncomfortable) upholstery are everywhere. So this month, I’m giving you permission to let it all go and start fresh. You don’t need an extensive budget for a little overhaul, either - follow my five tips below and you’ll feel back at home in no time. What are you waiting for?? Let’s reimagine those living spaces!
Xo,
Laura
WINDOW TREATMENTS
One of the most common requests I’ve gotten lately is for help with window treatments. It’s a decor piece that, honestly, most people forget about in normal times. But being home during the day for work and school has definitely shifted perspectives about what is necessary for comfortable living. Because whether you’re looking for room darkening drapery panels to block out that early morning light for sleep or mid-day TV viewing (hello, flexible work schedule) or you’re ready for some tailored roman shades or woven blinds for work call privacy, having functional and oh-so-pretty window treatments is a must. Trust me when I say that the cost is 100% worth it.
PILLOWS
Hands down my favorite simple transformation for any space is a quick pillow refresh. The beauty of this trick is that you can instantly change the vibe of your space without hefty remodel work or cost - all you need is a bit of fun and a willingness to try new things. Swapping out your pillows for new seasonal colors or playful patterns and textures completely shifts a room’s color and theme, and no matter how long you’re in love with the look, it’s a breeze to swap it out again in the future if you ever want another quick revamp. And the best part? Pillows are definitely affordable - you can find price points from less than $10 all the way up to $200 or more, so you're guaranteed to find a few new gems that are right in your budget.
STYLING OPPORTUNITIES
Sometimes a minor tweak in accessories here or there can pack a major punch for your home’s style. To get that refreshed vibe in a few different spaces in your home, look for areas that could use an upgraded “styling moment.” A blank small entryway or hallway are great spaces to start. You can bring in a few new pieces - like a narrow table, a few tall thin accessories, and a mirror (to make the space look bigger), then top it all off with a rug or runner for a pop of color and personality. Then finish the look with artwork or framed photos to add a little warmth, and voila! You’ve totally transformed an otherwise empty wall. If you don’t have an unused area to revamp, try simply rearranging the spaces you have - dressers, bookshelves, and vanity tops can always use a little excitement with a quick shift in decor elements.
REPURPOSING
Don’t have the budget to do a full-on decor shift? No problem! You can still get that updated look by simply repurposing your existing pieces. Go on a “shopping” spree around your house and see what you might like to use in a different space. Maybe that mirror above your dresser would look simply maaaaahhvelous in your entryway. Or, perhaps you can finally use those extra hooks in the bottom of your junk drawer to create a mini mudroom by your back door. The possibilities are endless!
Of course, if you’re like me and love the thrill of the hunt, be sure to check out your local antique/vintage/thrift shops for secondhand items, too. There are some amazing treasures to be found and they’re usually at killer prices. Just know that you may not find something every time you look - it takes a little time and persistence, but if you keep your eyes peeled enough, you just might find that perfect piece to slot right into your newly reimagined room. Word to the wise, though - before you go out looking for a new item, make sure you start with a blank slate. Pull out everything from the space you want to overhaul, then slowly put back the items you absolutely love and want to keep. Start with the larger anchor pieces (think furniture like sofa, coffee table, etc.), then slowly pepper in the decor. Whatever “holes” remain will give you inspiration for a wish list of things you’ll want to use to fill them up. Keep that list on hand with measurements and details so if you spot the right item, you can check if it fits your space right in the store.
