BATHROOM REMODEL TRENDS

design by Laura Engen

As much as I love a good DIY, bathroom remodels are usually not the place for them. Aside from being one of the most expensive and trickiest spaces to upgrade in a home, doing it right the first time is key, and hiring the pros to do all those complex steps - like plumbing, electrical work, tile, cabinetry, and countertops - makes all the difference in the world. After all, you want to love what you invest in. Beyond using pros, to make sure your remodel stands the test of time, it’s also important to avoid super trendy elements and instead stick to what will actually bring you happiness in the long run. Will you still love that whimsical orange graphic tile 5 years down the line? Or would something a bit more subtle (like a classic subway tile in a unique pattern) be a better choice? To help you sort through which trends are fleeting and which are built for the long haul, in today’s post, I’m talking all about those bathroom details that I get requests for over and over again (because there’s a reason they keep topping the list!). Go ahead and give it a read - I think you’ll like what you see.

Xo,

Laura

DRAMATIC COLORS

To make a bold statement in your bathroom, you don’t have to go all out with wild color palettes and funky accessories. In fact, it can be done in a way that feels timeless and chic, but still evokes an unexpected twist. The trick is to go for a neutral, yet dramatic hue like this gorgeous shade of black - it’s something you don’t typically see in bathrooms, and it gives the space instant class. If floor-to-ceiling paint or tiles are too much for you, try doing a dark-colored vanity cabinet or opting for black plumbing fixtures for a more subtle effect.

FURNITURE STYLE VANITIES

design by Laura Engen

Vanities look pretty much the exact same way they looked decades ago, which means it can be a challenge to find something unique. But getting an upgraded look for your bathroom isn’t impossible - the best way to accomplish it is to keep your eyes peeled for vanities with a furniture-style base. Taller legs, open shelves, special hardware, unique doors, and drawers can all help to up your room’s wow factor, and with any combo of these, your bathroom will definitely stand out from the crowd.

INTERESTING MIRRORS

A frameless oversized mirror is practical, yes, but it’s also a bit on the boring side. Mirrors don’t have to be only utilitarian, though. Why not opt for something in a fun and imaginative style to make it intentional within your design? I love mirrors like this one in a bathroom - not only does it add a nautical charm to the room, but its round shape also softens up the straighter lines of the vanity. It’s all about balance!

SHOWER ACCESSORIES

design by Laura Engen

I’ve noticed lately that for my clients, the shower is about more than a cleaning zone - it’s becoming an experience they want to look forward to. From adding an extra rainhead or his & her showerheads to incorporating jets, steam, soap niches, or a removable wand for washing the dog, there are endless ways to customize this everyday zone. I love that these accessories make each shower totally unique, and it’s a great way to get multiple uses out of one space. You can never go wrong with a bit of versatility.
