During the holidays, winter can be magical and exciting. But for many of us here in Minnesota, January often means the kick off for those winter blues (4 more months to go – yikes!). So this month, I’m talking all things home décor and sharing my top tips with you on how to make your home cozy and functional for this season. You’ll have a stylish abode in no time, and you’ll love spending time inside so much that spring will be here before you know it. Stay warm out there and Happy New Year!

Xo,

Laura

PICTURE LEDGE

If you’re the type of person who loves to change out artwork from time to time, then a picture ledge is a total must have. It’s easy breezy to move things around, and the best part is that you don’t have to worry about repairing or refilling any nail holes – simply lean your pieces against the wall and they’re ready to go. When you’re picking out your artwork, though, remember that variety is key. Be sure to keep things feeling eclectic by mixing and matching different frame colors, matte sizes, horizontal and vertical prints, and layering everything from photos to landscape art.

WALL LADDER

Baskets for blankets are one of my go-to decor elements. But lately, I’ve been absolutely in love with wall ladders. After all, here in Minnesota, when the temps drop, you can never get enough layers! Wall ladders aren’t just practical, either – they also double up as structural art in a room and make for an interesting display. Layer up cozy wools and plaids in complementary colors and patterns for the winter, then easily transition to spring with brighter colors and lighter-weight fabrics.

BASKETS AND BOWLS

Think outside the box by using woven baskets or bowls as wall art. With endless possibilities to layer unique textures and prints, you can go as wild or minimalist as you want. In fact, when you opt for baskets or bowls as art, there are no rules to follow. You could try keeping it monochromatic and symmetrical for an ordered and organized look. Or, opt for lots of colors and sizes to go for a more whimsical mix. Whatever your style, the best part about collections like these is that they can be easily added to or changed over time.

LANTERNS

Who doesn’t love a soft and magical glow at night (especially in the winter)?! I love incorporating lanterns into décor because not only does it help to bring the outdoors in, but it also adds an architectural element to the space. If open flames aren’t your jam, try mounting your lanterns on a wall and adding flameless candles - if you put them on a timer, they’ll turn on automatically at dusk and then off again after several hours, which is perfect for enjoying those cozy winter nights at home!

Hey You! I’m creating a FAQ page for my website (because interior design is a confusing profession I get lots of great questions all the time on how we work) and I want to know what you’re interested in knowing?! If you were going to hire a designer, what would you want to know (but might be too scared to ask...feel free to DM me if you don’t want to ask publicly). I want to hear your Thoughts, Questions, Comments- what would help you better understand how to work with a designer?? .

NO.1 Personally I’ve always been a girl a simple and practical gifts, so this week, I’m talking all about Valentines I’m secretly hoping for and why the top my list. So, let’s kick it off with flowers! If you’re not a huge fan of red and pink everything, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy what you actually love! Why not opt for a simple and stunning arrangement that’s more your style instead? Skip the elaborate or fancy looks (and those crazy overpriced rose bouquets) and go for just a couple of bunches of Trader Joe’s flowers (all of the same kind) in a picture or clear vase. It’s a gorgeous look, and if your S.O. is picking them out how much sweeter can I get?!

Pantone’s 2019 color of the year is living coral and I’m all about it. I love that it’s such a bright and happy shade, and there are so many ways to incorporate it into both your home and personal style. To start, why not add a bold pop of color to your front door? It’s the perfect way to get a fresh and updated look without totally committing to a major statement color. Plus, if you get tired of it after a few years, it’s crazy easy to change it up. I say go for those exciting colors you’ve been eyeing- after all, adding an extra splash of personality only serves to turn a few more heads. You’ll be the star of the neighborhood in no time!

Today I had a long overdue photo shoot at my home office- For once the focus wasn’t on the interiors but me, gulp. Like most of you I HATE pics of myself, taking them & looking at them. .
However with the help of @cristinaziemerbeauty for my hair/makeup and @woodfordsisters making me laugh and feel good about myself I’m happy to report I survived 😉 .
Oh and having this lil guy home sick from school made the shoot a little more exciting. He even made an appearance in a few “Lifestyle” shots. Turns out he LOVES the camera 📸
Styling tip of the day: remove your dust jackets it does wonders! ➡️ Swipe for before and afters. Honestly, so simple and makes such a difference! .
Real question is what do you do with all the covers when you take them off- I don’t feel like I can toss them, right?! I’m gonna need a large box 📦 .

I’m completely in love with Hat Collections right now. There’s just something so fun and whimsical about layering your fave hats together in one spot. Not only is it ideal in terms of storage (nothing is worse than trying to cram those babies into your closet), but it also doubles as artwork. How great is that?! And while I’ve always loved a good hat, I think creating your own wall is as good of an excuse as any to splurge on a few new ones, don’t you think? You never know when you’ll need that wide brim stripped number on a ultra-sunny day. Cheers to growing your hat collection!
